Prayer Plant (Maranta) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Marantaceae, native to tropical Central and South America and the West Indies.[2][3] Maranta was named for Bartolomeo Maranta, an Italian physician, and botanist of the sixteenth century. Maranta is a genus of fantastic low-growing foliage plants with most beautiful and decorative leaves, making it a beautiful plant species for houseplants. This genus is basically native to tropical Central and South America and the West Indies. Its leaves have striking markings of alternate green and dark green colors alongside the axis, and veins in deep contrasting colors such as light green and white at the beginning and red in older stages. The lower layer or back side of leaves of some of its species comes in fully Magenta or Light green color with the velvety touch. Maranta does not like direct sunlight, as it may cause faded leaves. Watering should be very frequently to do not allow the soil to dry. Soil should be rich, peat-based potting with excellent drainage is beneficial.
